Circulatory System - Structures and Functions of the Heart

Welcome to the introduction of the Circulatory System and today's focus on the structures and functions of the heart.

First I want you to complete the QFocus.  For this the person at the pink spot at the table group will be the recorder.  He/she will need their laptop and will record your questions into the correct Padlet below.  The student at the green spot will be the reporter for the table.  He/she will share out one or two of your questions with the group.  

QFocus: The organ of the heart is composed of many specific structures that allow for important functions within your body.







Second I want you to watch the video of the heart beating.

Task:
I want you to think about what kinds of things you witnessed in this short video.  
Why did it beat the way it did?  How many contractions does it look like it makes?
Did anything surprise you?

We will think-pair-share and have the person at the yellow spot report out a summary to the class.  


Third I want you to explore the following three sites and find the names and locations of the different structures in the heart.
On the provided Heart Diagram please label the:
1. 4 chambers of the heart
2. pulmonary vein and artery
3. 4 heart valves
4. sinoatrial nodes (S-A Node) and atrial-ventricular node (A-V Node)
5. septum
6. aorta
7. aortic arch

If done color code oxygen rich blood red and oxygen poor blood blue at it circultes throughout the heart.


Fourth If you complete the worksheet you can read the following article on current research using stem cells growing human hearts.

Circulatory System - Blood Links

We will also begin work on our Blood Drive projects in preparation for the HMS annual Blood Drive on March 10th

You can start to make a list of 10 people you will ask to donate blood in hopes that one will say "yes".  Think of neighbors, family, friends who live close to Yarmouth.

Science Current Event Product Descriptor and Links



Your assignment should follow this format:  
Title of Article
Author
Source (indicate newspaper, magazine, or web)
Date Article Written

First paragraph:  (Communication in Science:  Summary Writing)
Take dot jots while reading the article to gather information, so it will be easier to write this paragraph in your own words.  
Using complete sentences, write a brief summary of the article you read using the  5 “W’s (Who, What, Where, When, Why) and 1 “H” (How) graphic organizer.  This paragraph should tell the main idea of the article you read, as well as supporting details in order for the reader of your blog entry to have a good idea of what it was about.  
Second paragraph: (Writing Reflections)
Using complete sentences, write a reflection about the article. Use these questions to help you in writing the reflection.  Why did you choose this article?  What grabbed your attention?  How did you find it?  What did you learn?  Do you agree or disagree with the author and the ideas the scientists have come up with?
How does this article connect to what we are studying?  How is it affecting scientific knowledge, technology, and/or society? (IF AT ALL)  What are some of the benefits or limitations of science in this news event?  IF it’s being used to solve any types of problems or needs, what are they?  Did you make any inquiries (have any questions) before or after reading about, listening to, or watching this event?  
How did you check for the validity/credibility of information you received from the resource?  Do you believe it is reliable?  Why or why not?  How did you feel reading/watching/listening to this news?

History of and Using a Compound Microscope

Steps to use a compound microscope:
(when viewing and sketching at low power)

1. Plug it into the outlet, already placed between table
2. Make sure stage is down, on x40 (scanning)
3. Choose slide/ specimen
4. Turn on microscope, center slide over light
5. Adjust diaphragm if needed
6. View specimen, slowly turn course knob to focus
7. When focused, switch to low power
8. ONLY use fine adjustment, if problem finding specimen or focusing go back to scanning.
9. Once in focus, sketch on provided sheet.
10. When done switch to scanning, lower stage, take out slide.
11. Turn off, unplug, coil up and put away.
